Yeast Infection Treatments

Vaginal yeast infection is most often treated with a vaginal antifungal cream, tablet, or a suppository for a few days. While the preference of treatment is taking a tablet by mouth, oral treatment is often times reserved for recurrent infection that may be caused by yeast throughout the body. This is from the simple fact that oral medication affects the entire body, and a vaginal treatment limits its effect to the vaginal area. Oral antibiotic medication can cause many side effects such as headache, nausea, and abdominal pain; while vaginal treatment is unlikely to cause side effects.

Non-prescriptive vaginal medications are available for treating vaginal yeast infection; vaginal boric acid capsules are another option as well. If you've had a vaginal yeast infection before, and you're not pregnant, and you are absolutely certain your present symptoms are the same as previous infection, you may self-treat your infection. If you have a yeast infection that is reccurent despite treatment,be sure to visit your health professional. Recurring yeast infection can be a sign of another health problem.

Yeast infections are very common during pregnancy. If you happen to be pregnant, do not use any medication without first discussing your symptoms with your health professional.
